Grass carp is one of the common fish. There are wild grass carp in rivers. In addition, grass carp can also be fed artificially. The life span of grass carp is not particularly long, its average life span is between 7-8 years, under normal circumstances, the life span of grass carp will be in this range. The life span of some grass carp will be slightly longer, reaching 10 years or more. Sometimes very long-lived grass carp can live for about 20 years, but this kind of grass carp is relatively small.
How long grass carp can live is restricted by many factors. For example, wild grass carp living in rivers sometimes die because of unsuitable environment, such as polluted water quality, insufficient food, low water temperature and other factors. Especially in the case of water pollution, grass carp are prone to illness, and the mortality rate will be relatively high. In addition, human fishing is also an important factor in shortening their life span. The life span of grass carp in captivity is very short, they grow fastest at 2-3 years old, and then they may be sold quickly, and the life time is relatively short.
Grass carp can only reproduce after reaching the appropriate age, after they reach the age of sexual maturity. Generally speaking, grass carp are sexually mature at 3-4 years old. However, sometimes some grass carp will be precocious, and have the ability to reproduce at about two and a half years old. After sexual maturity, female grass carp will lay eggs. They lay eggs from April to July, when the water temperature is suitable. In this period, the peak of spawning of grass carp is in May. Artificial breeding of grass carp can also be carried out within this stage.
