The average length of musk turtle is 8-14 cm. Their heads are large and light brown, with two white strips on both sides of the top of their heads. Their shells are brown or black, and the top of the shell has a smooth oval shape and a high dome. The carapace of young musk turtles is usually black and rough in texture. Their abdominal armour is very small, and the shields of each abdomen are full of milky white skin. Musk turtles also have short tails.

Under normal circumstances, musk turtles will start laying eggs in 4-8 years. They produce two to three nests of eggs in spring or summer, and the number of eggs in each nest is about 1-5.

Under normal circumstances, male turtles grow for 4-7 years, and female turtles grow for 5-8 years before they have reproductive ability and can start mating. Musk turtle mating occurs at several times of the year, but the frequent mating period is after hibernation, that is, in spring. They mate for a long time, and after mating, musk turtles need to prepare a sand field in advance and prepare some sand in the jar.

Female musk turtles usually lay eggs between 4 and 6 months after hibernation. The spawning cycle of each female musk turtle is also different. All females have only one spawning cycle in a year.
