Lamprey is not a fish. It is an ancient animal of the Cyclostomata Petromyzonta, which is not a fish, so it is not a fish. The reason why there is the word eel in the name is that it is somewhat similar to eel in appearance. It has a slender body, no scales on the surface, a dorsal fin on the back, and a tail fin extending all the way to the tail. There are two eyes on the head and seven gill holes on each side behind the eyes.
Lampreys have a special way of hunting. Its mouth has many rows of yellow teeth with hooks on them, and when it approaches prey, it will suck its mouth tightly on it and use its tongue to drill into the body of prey. After that, it will stay for a month, continue to absorb blood and body fluids, although it will not kill the prey immediately, but will lead to the gradual weakening of the prey, let it die slowly, so it is also known as zombie fish.
Lampreys can generally be divided into three categories, namely, blood-sucking, carnivorous and harmless. Vampires feed mainly on salmon or trout and usually leave before the host dies for the next meal. Carnivores devour the flesh and blood of their hosts, mainly in smaller fish such as herring, and gnaw until only the bones are left. Both of them are harmful to the fishing industry, which is totally different from the third category.
Lamprey needs to undergo metamorphosis and development in the process of growth. Larvae need to live in fresh water, grow up to enter the sea to live, only before spawning will migrate to rivers. This creature is very old, existed 360 million years ago, and from the fossil point of view, it is almost the same as today's, almost no evolution.
