Sea lions and fur seals are both marine mammals that are often mentioned. They are both mammals in the suborder Pinnipeds of the order Carnivora of the class Mammalia. There are three families in the suborder of pinnipeds, namely sea lion family, seal family and walrus family. In the sea lion family, it is divided into two subfamilies, namely sea lion subfamily and sea dog subfamily.
It can be seen that sea lions and fur seals do not refer to the same animal, and there are still differences between them. If the two subfamilies of the sea lion family are called sea lions, then sea lions include all species of fur seals, which are also a kind of sea lion. If only the animals in the sea lion subfamily are regarded as sea lions, then sea lions and fur seals are two different animals belonging to different subfamilies, and there is no relationship between them.
As mentioned above, the family of sea lions includes the subfamily of sea lions and the subfamily of fur seals. If all the animals of the sea lion family are called sea lions, then the fur seal is included in the sea lion, and the fur seal belongs to the sea lion, at this time, the difference between the two is the different species included. Sea lions contain many species, including all species of fur seals.
If only the animals in the sea lion subfamily are called sea lions, the animals in the sea dog subfamily are not among the sea lions. If you want to distinguish the two, you can distinguish them by body hair. The most obvious feature of animals in the subfamily of fur seals is their dense body hair, which can be clearly seen from both field observation and pictures. The sea lions in the sea lion subfamily are not so thick. Another key feature of male sea lions is that their neck hair is longer than other parts, just like lions.
