The swordfish has two characteristics. The first is that it has a long beak like a sword. This is its upper jaw, which is not only hard, but also very sharp. Its length accounts for about one third of its body. It can be used as a tool for predation and a weapon for defending against various natural enemies. The second is its streamlined body, which is smooth, muscular and has a powerful tail, which makes it much faster than other fish, reaching a top speed of 110 kilometers per hour.
The swordfish's long mouth is its helper for predation. Unlike what many people think, it does not rely on its sword-like mouth to pierce its prey, but uses it to stun it. The fish usually feeds on mackerel, herring, flying fish, ghost head knife and squid, when it finds a school of fish, it will immediately rush into it, swing its sword, knock the prey unconscious and devour it, because of its fast speed, so the success rate of predation is very high.
Swordfish is a warm-water migratory fish species. In summer, it will swim to the colder sea area to look for food. In autumn, it will migrate to spawn. It usually lives in the warm-water sea area at 18-22 ℃. It has a wide range of activities, mostly at depths of 200-600 meters, and occasionally can swim to depths of more than 650 meters, up to 800 meters.
The distribution of swordfish is very extensive. It exists in tropical and subtropical waters all over the world. It can also live in cold water waters. It can be found in the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, and in the East China Sea and the South China Sea.
