Red-legged tortoises are not easy to distinguish between male and female when they are young. When it grows a little larger, it can be roughly distinguished by the characteristics of its plastron and tail:
Under normal circumstances, the plastron of male turtles is concave, while that of female turtles is flat. The tail of the male tortoise is longer and thicker, and the distance between the end of the tail and the excretory hole is farther; The female's tail is shorter and thinner, and the end of the tail is closer to the excretory hole. In addition, the female turtle and the male turtle's hip shield is also different. Usually, the male's hip shield is outward, while the female's hip shield is inward.
Red-legged tortoises of different sexes can be raised together. The red leg's body type belongs to the medium size, so long as the maintenance space is enough for them to carry on the activity, may put raises together. It is recommended that female and male turtles should be mixed in the ratio of 1:2 or 2:3, which can increase their reproductive capacity. When mixed breeding, it should be noted that the size difference of mixed breeding turtles should not be too large. During the maintenance period, it is also necessary to observe whether they attack each other. If such a phenomenon occurs, it is recommended to maintain them separately.
