Like many oviparous fish, a rat fish lays a large number of eggs. They can probably lay hundreds of thousands of eggs at a time. However, despite all these eggs, the number of surviving eggs is not much. During the breeding period, the male fish will fertilize the eggs of the female fish. Successfully fertilized eggs are pale yellow, and only these eggs can grow into small fish. After the female fish lays eggs, some egg cells will be swallowed again. Then the remaining fertilized eggs continue to hatch.
2. How often do rat fish produceRat fish is a common ornamental fish. Just like their names, they look very similar to rats. Compared with other fish, it takes them a longer time to enter the breeding period. It usually takes two years to grow and develop, and they can reproduce after sexual maturity. But they are a kind of fish with short breeding cycle.
Under the conditions of proper temperature, clean water, proper pH and sufficient food, they can reproduce almost once a month. Some can even breed once every half month. But when these conditions are not met, they will prolong the reproductive cycle. Some even need to wait until the right time to breed. During their breeding period, they need to adjust the water temperature to 26-28 ℃, the PH of water to 6.8-7.4, and feed them some foods with high protein content.
