The life span of the silver arowana is long or short. Some fish die as soon as they are born, while longer-lived fish can live up to 18 years. There is a big difference between the life span of fish in the wild and those in captivity, because fish that swim a lot live longer. The silver arowana growing in the natural environment can swim freely in the wide enough waters. It can live up to 20 years. Domestic fish can only move in the fish tank, so staying in an environment for a long time is not conducive to longevity. Under normal feeding conditions, it can only live for 6 to 7 years. If properly raised, it can live up to 18 years.
The silver arowana is larger, and their growth needs to go through a long process. Therefore, their growth period and development period will be much longer than ordinary fish. Generally speaking, small fish can mature in one year. These large fish take four or even five times as long to develop. Moreover, the sexual function of silver arowana develops slowly, and it takes at least 5 to 6 years to mature. Fish that are not sexually mature are still juveniles, and only fully developed fish are adults. Therefore, the silver arowana is considered adult only after 5 to 6 years old.
