The goldfish is a relatively long-lived fish among fish. How long a fish can live is closely related to its living environment, body length and its mature age. Fish that live in a suitable environment generally live one or two years longer than those that grow in other environments. The later a fish matures, the longer it will live. If the fish is well farmed, the bigger it is, the longer it will live. Generally speaking, the normal goldfish can live to about ten years old. The longest lived goldfish can live as long as 18 years.
The growth time of the goldfish is very long, so its development period and maturity period are also relatively long. Only fish with mature sexual function can reproduce. Because females grow much more slowly than males, they reach sexual maturity at different times. Generally speaking, male fish can mature in only five years. The female fish does not reach sexual maturity until she is at least six years old. Males between 5 and 16 years of age are the most suitable for breeding. However, the reproductive time of female fish is relatively short, only between 6 and 12 years old. So when the goldfish are six years old, they can consider mating and breeding.
